Humpty Dumpty is possibly the most known nursery rhyme in English poetry. It’s exact meaning is still stuff of collegiate debate.
For the record, nowhere in the rhyme is a huge egg sitting on a wall mentioned.
But if Goodell were to play the part of our beloved ovum, I’m not sure NFL owners should run to fix the cracked commish. The fall from his perch is about to put the limelight on America’s passion, which has grown to the point of turning a blind eye on anything from a misdemeanor to outright felonies.
Why?
Well, Simon and Garfunkle couldn’t have hit the nail on the head any harder when they prophetically wrote (in the 1960’s!) the song “Misses Robinson” with the lyrics “where have you gone Joe Dimaggio?” Commentary on the fact that athletes were treated like movie stars, only to be traded in for tabloid front page gossip. Back then no one knew what Joe did in his personal life. No one cared. And the media wasn’t about to bite the hand that fed.
Well, all that’s changed, and frankly for the better. The stuff were talking about when it comes to today’s athletes isn’t ‘Joes dating Marilyn’ its ‘Joe’s punching Marilyn’. It’s ‘Joe just put the beat down on a four year old boy’.
In the end if these kind of stories which have been and will continue to be swept under the rug so as to protect the image of the NFL, then Humpty Dumpty Roger Goodell should be fried.
